Top transport tips

1. Walking, riding a bike or using public transport will reduce emissions from the family car.

2. Try the bus, train or ferry for some of your work or shopping trips or to get to sporting events, concerts or other attractions.

3. Carpool whenever you can to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from cars.

4. You can avoid some trips altogether by using phone, fax or modem.

5. Maintaining correct tyre pressure can reduce your fuel consumption by up to 3 per cent as well as reducing tyre wear.

6. When it's time to buy a new car, consider changing to one with a smaller engine that uses less fuel. Better yet, consider a hybrid.

7. The more weight you're carrying in your car, the higher your fuel consumption. Try to pare down the excess kilos in the boot.

8. Take advantage of the LPG subsidy scheme to convert your car to fuel that produces less greenhouse gas emissions.

Fuel types

As a result of State Government clean fuel regulations, WA has the cleanest fuel in Australia . The Environmental Protection (Diesel and Petrol) Regulation 1999 has reduced the number of carcinogens and pollutants in vehicle exhaust emissions, creating better health and environmental conditions for West Australians.

The FuelWatch website compares fuel types currently available in Western Australia. If you are considering updating your car, take into account the type of fuel used to keep greenhouse gas emissions at a minimum.
